Sam Maher is an Australian drummer and percussionist better known for his work on the handpan - a rare and unique percussion instrument revered for its resonance and rich harmonic quality. His sound is informed by his interest in minimalism, pop structure and electroacoustic formats, and his self-taught approach to the instruments has amassed a devout following.
He first gained international attention when a video of him improvising an emotive and rhythmically complex piece in an empty subway station in New York City emerged, reaching millions. He has since toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, performing and teaching his boundless music. He currently lives and works in Fremantle, Western Australia.
